NEMS - Since 2006 Wintergreen Rescue has partnered with the County of Nelson to assist with EMS delivery on a county-wide basis. When an emergency medical call is received the closest volunteer agency is dispatched. Also dispatched is a career medic unit from Lovingston. We refer to this team as “Nelson EMS”, or “NEMS”. NEMS handles nearly 2,000 incidents per year utilizing a fleet of three ambulances. NEMS medics are a very important part of the Wintergreen Fire & Rescue team. All costs associated with NEMS are covered by the County.
Firefighter Development Center (FDC)
22 Lodebar Estate, Nellysford, VA 22958
Firefighter Development Center - This facility is setup to do live fire training, technical rescue, and search & rescue. The FDC is a Class A Burn Building that opened in April 2024. It is located at the North end of Nellysford on a 5-acre tract adjacent to the Wintergreen master plan and is a resource available to all Nelson County fire departments for their training needs. This building has been a great asset to assist us with our mission to promote safety through fire suppression and technical rescue activities. Our goal is to provide instruction to aspiring firefighters through our Fire Academies, which include Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations, Technical Rescue Awareness, and VDFP EVOC. This project was made possible by a single generous donor.
